How to Get Great Sound With Your Factory Radio

PA Factory Radio

Here at Precision Audio, we are specialists in car stereo systems, and have been for more than 28 years. In the early days of car audio, the first thing we would do is change out the radio in the dash because aftermarket radios were of much higher quality than the factory-installed equipment. Well, times have changed, but old habits die hard. One of the most common things we hear in our store is people asking for a new radio because they want to improve their sound quality. The reality is that, in newer vehicles, if you want better sound, changing the factory radio is not going to help. Let’s explore how things have changed over the years.

A Factory Radio Doesn’t Need To Mean Bad Sound

In the early days, changing out just the factory radio for a high-performance unit from us would net you a significant sound improvement. Not anymore. Factory-installed radios in newer vehicles are just fine, so most of the time, changing them out is just a waste of your money. But does that mean you have to continue driving around with a dull, lifeless-sounding car stereo system? Absolutely not! The secrets to better-sounding music in your vehicle nowadays are speakers and amplification.

Speaker Upgrades For Best Improvement In Sound Quality

Speaker Upgrade In most vehicles, the single biggest improvement in sound quality, not quantity, happens when you change out the speakers. Car makers typically use very inexpensive materials to make their speakers and are more concerned about how long they will last, not how good they sound. Precision Audio has done many vehicles where simply installing some better-grade speakers will bring the system alive.

Amplifiers Increase Volume And Clarity

Amplifier UpgradeNow, if you want more volume, you really need an amplifier. And many people never realize their need for one. Have you ever noticed that, when you start to turn up your music past a certain point, the sound gets grainy? That is the point where your factory stereo system is running out of power. By adding an amplifier, you can get more volume before your music sounds grainy.

You may be thinking at this point that you want better-quality sound and more volume, and many of our customers think this way. That means we are going to add speakers and an amplifier.

Bring Out The Bottom End With Subwoofers

Subwoofer UpgradeBut what about bass? My stock radio has no bass – zero, nada. That is happening because you lack a subwoofer. A subwoofer can easily reproduce the bottom octaves in your music, where the kick drum and bass guitar live. Adding a subwoofer will bring life and definition to your music that makes you want to listen for hours on end.
